Day 44 - A special day at sea

I wrote yesterday that today would be special on several counts. Although a sea day, July 2nd 2015 in itself was going to be a special day for me, regardless.  As trivia fans will know, this is the middle day of a 365 day year, but wait, there is more.

My dear dad was born on July 2nd 2015, making today what would have been his 100th birthday.

The normal routine of breakfast then losing trivia was followed by a bit of a break, before the action restarted.  Afternoon trivia was at 2pm just after we’d passed Sicily and of course we didn’t win.  Once again, Kelly had several obscure Australian questions.  We nipped up to the buffet for a small meal (the reason for that will be obvious shortly) then grabbing the video camera, we headed for Razzmatazz, the nightclub venue for Karaoke, where John and Laura had promised they’d perform, even though they said they were the world’s worst Karaoke performers.

They were without doubt, the stars of the session.  They were also the only performers and we, along with Teri and Alex, were Rent a Crowd, along with cruise staffer Sarah who introduced them and DJ Richie who set up the equipment.

They’d be the first to admit that it wasn’t exactly a performance worthy of  a recording contract and ’King Of The Road’ will forever be etched into our memories.

Teri and Alex were then bullied into having a go, with the incentive of a prize, just for performing.  They simply flipped open the list and randomly stabbed.  We have no idea what the song was - and they didn’t add too much to the backing track either.  Richie apparently loves to sing so as there was no-one else in the place, he grabbed the mike and as the resident DJ, we expected a stunning performance.  Being kind, the best part about it was Teri and Paula’s dancing.

Oh well, it was a laugh.  We were still convulsed as we climbed the stairs after passing Stromboli, and my door card wouldn’t work.  When a lady appeared at the door, we realised why.  Wrong deck…

We then got ready for the Captain’s Circle ‘Captain’s Welcome cocktail party’  which was a reverse from normal, as WE welcomed the Captain!  They seemed to be quite generous with the drinks again and with 700 Elite members  plus the Platinums, that is a fair few people over the two sessions.

This was our night for the ‘Sterling Steakhouse’ courtesy of a voucher from our travel agents and we went along at 6:30pm with Teri and Alex, Laura and John – our afternoon trivia team.

A very pleasant evening but for once, my steak was a little overcooked.  The starter prawns were different from in the past and also a slightly smaller portion.  The seafood bisque was delicious and we actually enjoyed the bottle of champagne that we’d won earlier!

I skipped dessert and somewhat surprisingly, we weren’t even offered the cheeseboard.

The pot of (ex-concentrate) coffee wasn’t very hot and so we didn’t drink it and just mentioned it to the waiter, turning down a replacement, saying we’d get a coffee in the Atrium later.  The Head waiter returned a few minutes later with three coffees in takeaway containers – and they added a shot of vanilla!  That more than made up for it.  I could get used to that.

On then to the theatre for the production show ‘Dance’.  What a great show.  Recorded musical backing so no orchestra  and the dancing was up with the best we have seen on any Princess ship.  It now goes without saying that the singing was also top class.

So, an interesting day, just a little different from usual and certainly quite memorable.

Tomorrow we have Civitavecchia and an expected temperature of 35 degrees, so we’ll just wander the city as we have done Rome twice and in that heat, probably our best option.  With Wimbledon on the television, Paula will be happy enough when we are on the ship as it gets excellent coverage on two channels – ESPN and the sports channel, 24.  It is also British Grand Prix weekend so I’ll be hoping to catch that too.
