Day 32 - A sea day on the way to the Suez Canal

At last, a cough free, clear headed night – and no snoring either!

Nothing of any great excitement to report and Cruise long trivia was even less exciting than usual.  I think we got just two questions right…  With a score like that, we won’t be climbing the leader-board any time soon.

Late lunch of corn chowder and I tried the crumbed catfish plus another fish in a light sauce.  Not a lot of taste to the catfish, which is fine, as it means there is nothing to dislike.   The joy of buffet dining (particularly on a ship) is being able to sample foods you wouldn’t dream of ordering in a paid restaurant.

I managed to watch F1 qualifying on channel 24 (channel 42 on our TV) then on to afternoon trivia where once again, I think we came second.  As is usual, the same teams usually win either morning or afternoon trivia, but one of the reasons for competing is just the opportunity to socialise and maybe learn something – no matter how trivial that something actually is.

No visit to the elephant watering hole today.  Instead, we watched a recording of the Cruise Director’s interview with the Captain, Bill (“only my mother calls me William”) Kent.  He really does speak very well and has a very dry wit.  He is certainly very good at keeping the passengers informed and someone said he is one of Princess’s most popular captains.

Pre-dinner show was another ‘mentalist’, Kennedy, from the UK.  A very good show and once again, totally baffling.  How can 3 (or 4?) people write down random 4 digit numbers and the total, added up by another passenger, come to 12939, which just happens to look like PEPSI, mirrored, and also the printed (not written) numbers on the rear of a large card that had been on the front of the stage for the whole time? Ironically, the second show came up with the same numbers…

Our waiter Robert, normally a model of efficiency, had a real off day, getting the orders wrong, but we let him off...

On to the late theatre show.  In the row in front was a tall guy with a bald head.  We sat to the right of him, leaving two or three seats empty in the centre.  The old chap sitting behind me said that they ought to issue the baldies with matt black paint, as the reflections were dazzling him.  Just before the show started, another couple squeezed past and sat in those seats and yes, the guy was another tall baldy.  I have no idea what the old chap behind thought, but we had a real giggle.  The show was another act new to us, variety entertainer, Peter Cutler – also from the UK.  Once again, a very good show.  So far, the entertainment on this cruise has been very good, with plenty of acts we haven’t seen before.  This is understandable, as the pool of Australasian based performers is more limited than the UK and Europe and we are on the verge of the European catchment area.

The Captain informed us that our transit through the Suez was likely to be subject to delays due to dredging work and that there were restrictions in place, with the whole southbound convoy having to exit the length of the canal, before the northbound convoy could commence.

CRUISERS

As at today, we have spent something like 348 days at sea with Princess, most of that with this class of ship. Today, I learned something new about our stateroom/cabin - which has always been the same class and always on the same deck.

Many Cruise Critic and travel message-board readers ask about the cabin power outlets and our stock answer to date has been that there is a USA outlet or two (two flat pins plus one round) and an Australian/NZ outlet (three flat pins).  On this ship, there is one USA, one UK/Singapore three pin square socket plus the Australian/NZ socket, all three on the desk/vanity.  However, the UK and Aus/NZ outlets are so close that you can only really use one or the other.  Previously on the Dawn Princess, there was also a spare USA outlet behind the TV, but not on this ship.

Having chatted to serial cruiser Kev, he informed me that there is also another USA outlet, just underneath the table-stand!  That was a revelation, but I always did wonder why there was no outlet on the opposite side of the room to the desk.

Being on the tall side and the power outlet sitting right up underneath the table, no wonder I’d never seen it before.
